Our sweet pea seedlings are getting ready to be planted soon! Over the past few weeks, I have been getting them acclimated from growing indoors to living outside. This process, known as hardening off, is essential for the health of seedlings started indoors, ensuring a smooth transition to their permanent outdoor home. All of these steps mean that we are getting closer to enjoying these beautifully fragrant flowers!

Our sweet pea seedlings are getting ready to be planted soon! Over the past few weeks, I have been getting them acclimated from growing indoors to living outside. This process, known as hardening off, is essential for the health of seedlings started indoors, ensuring a smooth transition to their permanent outdoor home. This week, I was reminded of this quote as I spotted our first tulips breaking through the soil. I’ve been concerned that our tulips were over two weeks late compared to last year and started questioning whether they had been eaten or damaged. But, I also knew it’s been a colder winter than the previous few growing seasons. I told myself not to worry and to let nature work at its own pace. Sure enough, our tulips didn’t hurry, but they still arrived. Mission accomplished, Mother Nature!

Yesterday, I tucked our ranunculus seedlings into the ground in our low tunnels. I have been tending to them indoors since sprouting them in January. They will grow strong roots while there is still a chill in the air and bloom beautifully this spring, hopefully just in time for Mother’s Day. It’s exciting to be planting the first seedlings of the season!

Today, our sweet pea seedlings got their “haircut”! Trimming a plant stem at this stage is called pinching, and it encourages the sweet pea plants to grow more flowers. This year, I’m experimenting with rooting the cuttings to make more sweet pea plants! What could be better than more flowers?!

It always amazes me how resilient these tiny plants can be when temperatures dip below freezing day after day. These mighty seedlings grow strong roots in the cool weather to produce many beautiful flowers once the weather warms. From snow and ice to everything nice!

Yesterday, I took advantage of the above-freezing temperatures and pruned our blueberry bushes. Pruning invigorates the plant, forcing new growth and increasing fruit size and quality.

We’ve been growing our small patch of highbush blueberries for nine years and currently grow seven varieties, including early, mid, and late season berries. Blueberries are native to North America, and the flowers provide an early-season food source for bees. We love hearing all the whistling bees in the blueberry patch each spring. And, of course, the berries are delicious and nutritious!

We look forward to sharing our Whistling Bee blueberries with our members again this year!

As CSA Week comes to an end, I find myself pondering what makes Community Supported Agriculture so special. I think that the one defining quality of a CSA that makes them so unique is that they offer connections. They connect members to their communities, the goods they receive, the farm where they get their share, and the farmers who grow that share. CSAs allow members to connect to the story behind the food they eat, the flowers they enjoy, and the farm they are helping to support. And while members connect to that story, they become part of it.

There can often be a disconnect in today’s fast-paced world of convenience. By participating in a CSA, you get some of that connection back. In the spirit of connection, during CSA Week, I shared about our flowers, our farm, and me, the grower behind your Whistling Bee bouquet. Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about us and our mission. I am overwhelmed by the response from our community and want to thank all of our returning and new members for trusting us and supporting our mission. It’s day five of our CSA Week celebration! Today, I’m sharing a bit about myself to offer a connection with the farmer behind your Whistling Bee bouquet.

The two greatest loves in my life are my family and growing. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 25 years, and I’m the proud mom of a teenager who holds my heart. Being a grower has become integral to who I am, and I feel like I’m missing a piece of myself without it. My hands need to be in the soil, and my heart needs to be nurturing seedlings. It’s who I am. And after taking years to figure that out, I’m never letting that part of me go.

When I’m not among the flowers, or on the sidelines cheering for my son in his many activities, I am an author, artist, avid foodie, and animal lover. I’m also a 2022 @floretflower workshop graduate, ASCFG member, certified Pollinator Steward, and @triplewrenfarms novice dahlia hybridizer. I love to laugh and I also love sharing our flowers in our community and spreading kindness and joy with each stem.

We grow a variety of seasonal specialty cut flowers on our farm in the Hudson Valley of New York and arrange them in fresh bouquets for our community. We are an eco-conscious flower farm committed to being kind to the earth. We are Pollinator Steward Certified, and our naturally grown flowers provide food and habitat for pollinators. In addition, we package all of our bouquets in eco-friendly materials that are easily recycled or composted. When you purchase flowers from our farm, you can feel good knowing the story behind those flowers. You can be confident that our flowers are grown with love using ecologically responsible practices for the health of our farm and our community. The flowers we share are fresh, seasonal, and harvested at the correct time so that they will have the best vase life. Most flowers available in stores today are flown from around the world. This is a national week to honor and encourage community-supported agriculture (CSA). CSAs create a meaningful connection between community members and farmers. When you sign up for a CSA membership at a farm, they set aside a share of the farm’s upcoming harvest just for you. This is a great way to support local farmers directly!

As part of the celebration, we will open our CSA subscription registration tomorrow, February 17th, and I’m happy to announce that all four of our floral subscriptions will return for the 2025 season! With a flower subscription, you will receive a bountiful flower bouquet each week for the subscription duration. These bouquets are filled with our best flowers of the season, and when you subscribe to a share, we set aside a portion of our harvest especially for you! You knew it was coming. I can’t name our favorite spring flowers without mentioning daffodils! We’ve planted hundreds of heirloom narcissus in over a dozen varieties on the farm. The fragrant varieties are my favorite, such as Sir Winston Churchill, pictured here. This variety once brought one of our members to tears because the fragrance reminded her of a recently passed grandmother. She was so thankful for that moment of remembrance. It was such a lovely, touching moment that reminded me how powerful flowers can be and how much they touch our hearts.

Of course we couldn’t talk about our favorite spring flowers without mentioning peonies! We get so excited each season when these ruffled, elegant flowers are about to bloom. We’ve been growing some of our peonies for 20 years here on the farm and when they arrive it feels like seeing an old friend. We love sharing these beauties with our community.
